What is my Renewal Cycle?

DENTISTS - A prerenewal period is the 36 months preceding September 30 of the year of the renewal.
DENTAL HYGIENISTS - A prerenewal period is the 36 months preceding September 30 of the year of the renewal.
ASSISTANTS - N/A

How Many Credits Do I Need?

DENTISTS - Dentists are required to attest they have completed of a minimum of 48 hours of continuing education over the three-year licensing period.
DENTAL HYGIENISTS - Each person who applies for renewal of a license as a dental hygienist shall have completed 36 hours of CE relevant to the practice of dental hygiene during the prerenewal period.
ASSISTANTS - There are no formal education or training requirements for an initial level of dental assisting.

What, if Any, Are The Mandatory Subjects?

DENTISTS - Safe Opioid Prescribing Practices: Prescribers with Controlled Substances Registrations are required to complete 3 hours of continuing education (CE) on safe opioid prescribing practices to renew their Controlled Substances Registration Sexual Harassment Training: All dentists and dental hygienists are mandated by law to take this one-hour course during every three-year license renewal period. Dentists are also required to offer a sexual harassment course to employees once each year. A dentist or dental hygienist shall provide proof of current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification intended for health care providers at the time of renewal.
DENTAL HYGIENISTS - A dentist or dental hygienist shall provide proof of current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification intended for health care providers at the time of renewal Beginning January 1, 2020, all licensees are required to complete 1 hour of continuing education specific to Sexual Harassment prevention. Licensees who prescribe controlled substances shall complete 3 hours on Safe Opioid Prescribing Practices. With respect to the requirement that a public health dental hygienist have additional structured courses in dental education in advanced areas specific to public health dentistry, education in advanced areas specific to public health dentistry must include emergency procedures for medically compromised patients (5 hours), pharmacology (5 hours), medical recordkeeping procedures (4 hours), geriatric dentistry (5 hours), pediatric dentistry (5 hours), and pathology (5 hours)
ASSISTANTS - Successfully complete a structured training program in coronal scaling and intracoronal temporization of a tooth provided by an educational institution (such as a dental school or a dental hygiene or dental assisting program), an approved CE provider, or by a statewide dental or dental hygienist association approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) that includes the following: a. minimum 32 hours of didactic and clinical manikin or human subject instruction covering specified content, b. an outcome assessment examination that demonstrates competency, c. completion of 6 full-mouth scaling procedures under the observation and with approval of the supervising dentist (if training not from a CODA-accredited dental assisting program), d. issuance of a certificate of completion (which must be kept on file at the dental office).

Is There a Limit to The Number of Online Classes

"CE credit may be earned for completion of an individual study course (correspondence, audio or video course) sponsored by an approved sponsor. The courses shall include a test that the licensee must pass to obtain credit. No more than 50% of the required CE credit hours during a prerenewal period may be acquired through correspondence courses. CE credit may be earned from teleconferencing courses with a moderator present given by an Illinois approved sponsor."
